Meander eastwards from Launceston via Scottsdale to St Helens. The road winds past historic small towns on the Trail of the Tin Dragon, through lichen draped rainforests and lush dairy country. From St Helens a short trip north brings you to the white sands and turquoise waters of Binalong Bay; features which stay with you for your entire coastal journey. This is Tasmania’s holiday playground where you can swim, dive, fish, kayak, canoe, walk, visit vineyards, enjoy local foods or simply relax in comfort at your B & B and let the world go by.
Drive south with curving surf beaches on your left and forested hills inland. Explore the dry sclerophyll forest of the Douglas Apsley National Park with its rugged gorge and mysterious green waterhole. Stay at Bicheno, Coles Bay or Swansea, all great bases from which to explore the Freycinet coast, with an excellent range of cafes and restaurants for evening meals.
Pack a picnic, don your walking shoes and set off for the lookout for that famous view of Wineglass Bay. Ask your hosts about the many other walks in the area. Not a walker? Try a guided quad bike tour, cruise round the peninsula or catch the aqua taxi to a secluded beach. For keen photographers a flight’s a must.
Allow time to explore historic Swansea, at Bicheno watch penguins came back to their burrows at night and sample our oysters and crayfish. Further south take an eco tour to Maria Island for great walking in a naturalist’s paradise with ruins of a penitentiary pre-dating Port Arthur. Explore, indulge, enjoy.
